The shop was built in 2014 as part of the Gateway project. It was clear that people visiting would love to be able to take ‘a little piece of the Cathedral’ with them.

As part of a plan to really enhance the visitor experience the aim was to provide good quality gifts and souvenirs. Over the years since the gift shop opened the range of products on offer has evolved and continues to do so and 1554 gift shop has become more than just a gift shop. As well as unique Cathedral gifts we are supporting more and more businesses local to Sheffield and really listening to find out what our customers want. Let’s tell you a little bit about the coffee shop…

In 2015 there had been an idea to create an inviting, comfortable place where people could come together and enjoy great food and great coffee.

After much planning and many ideas, 1554 was born in June 2015. 1554 became so much more than just a coffee shop and an integral part of the wider mission of the Cathedral in the city. Many people who have lived in Sheffield all their lives had not been inside the Cathedral until maybe they were meeting friend for coffee in 1554 or heard about 1554 via the grapevine.

The Coffee Shop and The Gift Shop are part of Sheffield Cathedral Enterprise, this is the trading arm of Sheffield Cathedral and so mid-2020 the decision was taken for them to begin to work really closely together under the same brand of 1554 Coffee and Gift Shop.
